“Andy Smith has become one of our most valued animateurs; he strikes exactly the right balance between informality and authority with young people, and his enthusiasm and imagination are always infectious and inspiring.”
Nick Ponsillo, Learning Manager, Manchester Camerata.
Andrew’s proven dedication to working in music education has enabled him to deliver inspiring projects across the UK, to people of all ages and within a variety of social and cultural settings.
Andrew has worked in mainstream education and with real effect in more challenging environments such as prisons, youth offender units and hospitals. In addition to teaching composition techniques, his delivery methods include activities to build confidence and self-esteem, as well as team building and leadership skills – all of which come together to achieve high standards of music making.
Andrew is currently composer and musical director of the ‘El Sistema’ inspired IN HARMONY TELFORD & STOKE-ON-TRENT project, a scheme that seeks to inspire the lives of young people and their communities through the power of music making. Other notable successes in music education and outreach include projects with MANCHESTER CAMERATA; BBC LEARNING; OPERA NORTH; ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE; NORTHERN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA; CHESTER UNIVERSITY; JESSIE’S FUND; MUSIC & THE DEAF.
